As the leader in thyroid and parathyroid care, the Russell Center is always looking for ways to provide better outcomes for our patients. One of the frustrations with thyroid biopsies is that they need to be repeated about 5% of the time when performed by most surgeons. This outcome can be improved to almost ZERO when a pathologist is present at the time of the biopsy. Why? Because the pathologist can request additional information or sampling at that time instead of calling the next week. This saves the patient time AND stress. Even better, studies have shown that FNAs performed with a pathologist present to prepare the slides improves outcomes by 1-2%. While this might not seem like much, that means 5-10 patients each year will have a better result than if they went elsewhere. (we explain this better on our Instagram page @jonrussellmd where we talk about ROSE: Rapid On-Site Evaluation).
Since August of 2024, we have partnered with experienced pathologists who come to the Russell Center to perform ROSE. Since that time, we have not had any patients who required a repeat biopsy due to inadequate first-biopsy results. And all patients have had results in 48 hours or less. Hooray!
